The book of Exodus describes one of the two services of the sanctuary, that is, the daily service, foreshadowing the death of Jesus Christ for the repentant sinner’s salvation: «Now this is that which you shall offer on the ; two of the first year, day by day continually. (...) This shall be a burnt offering throughout your generations at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the Lord.»
The first stage of Jesus’ ministry, that is, His work of sacrifice, corresponds with the daily service performed in the first part of the sanctuary, the courtyard. This work of sacrifice leads us to the first step of our spiritual progress, that is:
Glorification.
Justification.
Sanctification.
Mortification.
The Epistle to the Hebrews explains the work of Jesus in the heavenly sanctuary: «Christ came a High of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect , not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building. Neither by the of goats and calves, but by His own He entered in once into the Holy Place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.»
Besides the daily service, the priest had to make intercession in the Holy Place, through the offering of burning incense. The First Book of the Chronicles describes this service of intercession: «Aaron was separated, that he should the most holy things, he and his sons for ever, to burn before the Lord, to minister to Him, and to in His name for ever.»
Jesus’ work of intercession is the second stage of His ministry, which takes place in the second part of the sanctuary, the Holy Place. Therefore, during this stage of intercession, the furnishings of the Holy Place are useful to favor our spiritual growth. The spiritual tools symbolized by these furnishings are (check off all the right answers):
the light of the Spirit (the candlestick and its oil).
the study of God’s Word (the table of showbread).
penance deeds (the altar of burnt offering).
prayer (the altar of incense).
The second stage of Jesus Christ’s ministry, that is, His work of intercession, favors our spiritual growth, and brings us to reflect more and more God’s character. Second step of our spiritual progress, this continuous work of the Holy Spirit within us is called:
Glorification.
Justification.
Sanctification.
Mortification.
The annual service was performed at the end of the religious year, on the Day of Atonement. What was the purpose of this second service?
Consecrating a new High Priest.
Celebrating the Passover.
Welcoming the new converts to Judaism.
Cleansing the sanctuary.
The annual service, on the Day of Atonement, was thus the opportunity to examine one’s conscience, each person having to admit the gravity of his sins, and the price of God’s forgiveness: His Son Jesus. Some of the following events were taking place during the annual service. Which ones? (Check off all the right answers.)
Allotting a goat for the Lord, and offering it as a sin offering.
Allotting a goat for the scapegoat, and offering it as a sin offering.
Allotting a goat for the Lord, and sending it into the wilderness.
Allotting a goat for the scapegoat, and sending it into the wilderness.
The third and last stage of Jesus Christ’s ministry, that is, His work of judgment, consists in examining the case of each believer, and thus identifying those whose conversion is genuine. This work of judgment will lead the faithful believer to the third step of his spiritual progress, that is:
Glorification.
Justification.
Sanctification.
Mortification.
The Epistle to the Hebrews confirms that «the Lord shall His people.» Fortunately, this same epistle teaches us that Jesus Christ will act as an Advocate for all those who accept Him as their Savior and Lord, thus granting them eternal life: «For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to in the presence of God for .»
