If I Were Told the Future - Test 24

Letter to the Church of Pergamos

In order to check your understanding and your progress in the study of the Word of God, we invite you to fill out this short test and return it to us. The correct answers will be sent back to you as soon as possible.

A mark of 70% or better will allow you to submit the test of Lesson 25. Upon the completion of the entire Bible course If I Were Told the Future, you will receive a Certificate of Achievement.

If I Were Told the Future: Test for Lesson 24

  1. The book of Revelation contains seven letters addressed to seven different churches. The third one is the church of Pergamos. The origin of the name «Pergamos» is uncertain, but its derived meaning is:
    «Exalted city».
    «Humble city».
    «Faithful city».
    «Pure city».

  2. In the letter to the church of Pergamos, found in the book of Revelation, Jesus is portrayed as follows, «These things said He which has the sharp sword with two edges.» According to the Epistle to the Hebrews, what does the sharp two-edged sword symbolize?
    The Holy Spirit.
    God’s judgment.
    Faith working through love.
    The Word of God.
So it seems that the condition of Pergamos requires the use of this symbolic sword, to bring this church back to the right path.

  3. Besides their local application, the seven letters also have a prophetic application, describing the seven stages of the Christian Church history, from the days of John until the end of times. Which period is prophetically described by the letter to the church of Pergamos?
The Persecuted Church, from A.D. 100 to 313.
The Compromising Church, from A.D. 313 to 538.
The Corrupt Church, from A.D. 538 to 1517.
The Reformation Church, from A.D. 1517 to 1755.

  4. In His letter to the church of Pergamos, Jesus mentions the positive points of this church. Among these positive points, we find the following ones (check off all the right answers):
    «You hold fast My name.»
«You hate the deeds of the Nicolaitanes.»
«You have not denied My faith.»
    «You have labored for My name’s sake.»

  5. During the period prophesied by the letter to the church of Pergamos, the Church held councils which reaffirmed some of the great biblical truths about Jesus Christ. Among these truths, we find the following ones (check off all the right answers):
    Jesus is fully God.
    Jesus is fully human.
Jesus combines within Himself full divinity and full humanity.
    Jesus is not God.

  6. On the other hand, Jesus directs the following reproach at the church of Pergamos, «You have there them that hold the doctrine of , who taught Balak to cast a stumbling block before the children of , to eat things sacrificed to , and to commit

  7. During the period prophesied by the letter to the church of Pergamos, the Church accepted to «convert to Christianity» many pagan doctrines and rites, by craving for domination over peoples of all beliefs. Among these pagan doctrines and rites, we find the following ones (check off all the right answers):
Observance of Sunday as the day of rest.
    Worship of the dead.
    Babies baptism by sprinkling.
    Worship of the Virgin Mary.

  8. The letters to the seven churches also contain a personal message for each one of us. The advice and promises specifically addressed to the church of Pergamos can indeed be of great help to us, because:
very difficult times will come before Jesus’ return.
it is always easier to yield to compromise.
the fire of our first love must be kept alive.
our faith can turn into cold formalism.

  9. To avoid the errors of the church of Pergamos, the Second Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians advises, «Be you not unequally yoked together with . For what fellowship has with unrighteousness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what concord has with Belial? Or what part has he that with an infidel?»

  10. Among the following elements, please check off all those which Jesus promises to him who overcomes, in the letter to the church of Pergamos:
    «Hidden manna.»
    «A white stone.»
    «The morning star.»
    «A new name.»
