Screen 1 |
Welcome to this lesson. Let’s pray together: |
Our Lord, There are still two more great prophetic periods that we wish to understand: the 1290 days and the 1335 days, both contained in the last chapter of the book of Daniel. But we know that, without Your help, we cannot discover the secret of these prophecies. This is why we humbly ask You to guide us, so that our understanding may be in accordance with truth. In Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. |

Daniel 7:25 | Comments |
[The saints of the Most High] shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. | With the words «a time and times and the dividing of time», «forty and two months» (42 x 30 = 1260), or «1260 days», our last lesson showed us a 1260-year period of persecution, from A.D. 538 to 1798. |
Revelation 13:5,7 | |
And power was given to [the beast] to continue forty and two months. (...) And it was given to him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them. |

Daniel 12:6-8 | Comments |
«How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?» And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was on the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by Him that lives for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and a half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. And I heard, but I understood not. Then said I, «O my lord, what shall be the end of these things?» |
When Daniel received once again the prophecy about this 1260-year period of persecution against God’s people, he did not understand its meaning. So he asked for more information about it. |

Daniel 12:9,10 | Comments |
And he said, «Go your way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand. But the wise shall understand.» |
Then the angel told Daniel that the meaning of this prophecy couldn’t be understood before «the time of the end». At that time, God would unseal the book, allowing only the wise to «understand» it. But how can we get this understanding? |
If I Were Told the Future | Lesson 52
The 1290 Days | ||
Screen 5 |
Understanding is seeking to know God and to do His will: |
«We know that the Son of God is come, and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him that is true, and we are in Him that is true, even in His Son Jesus Christ.» (1 John 5:20) «From where then comes wisdom? And where is the place of understanding? (...) Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.» (Job 28:20,28) «The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.» (Proverbs 9:10) «Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law; yes, I shall observe it with my whole heart.» (Psalm 119:34) «For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that you might be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.» (Colossians 1:9) «A man of understanding walks uprightly.» (Proverbs 15:21) |
If I Were Told the Future | Lesson 52
The 1290 Days | ||
Screen 6 |
But rejecting God and His will is a serious lack of understanding: |
«For My people are foolish, they have not known Me. They are silly children, and they have none understanding.» (Jeremiah 4:22) «(...) having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart.» (Ephesians 4:18) «Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding: he that does it destroys his own soul.» (Proverbs 6:32) «There is none that understands, there is none that seeks after God. They are all gone out of the way.» (Romans 3:11,12) «There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the Lord.» (Proverbs 21:30) |

Daniel 12:11-13 | Comments |
From the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that makes desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. Blessed is he that waits, and comes to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. But go you your way till the end be: for you shall rest, and stand in your lot at the end of the days. |
These are the last verses of the book of Daniel. Before leaving Daniel, the angel gave him two last prophetic periods:
|

The 1290 Days | ||
Screen 8 |
Daniel 12:11 | Comments |
From the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that makes desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. | The prophecy of the 1290 days begins «from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away», and ends when «the abomination that makes desolate [is] set up». Indeed, some literal translations of the Bible (such as the Young’s Literal Translation) indicate that these two events mark the beginning and the end of the period of the 1290 days. First, let’s look at the starting point of the 1290 days. |

Daniel 12:11 | Comments |
From the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that makes desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. | The prophecy of the 1290 days begins «from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away». By comparing this passage with the prophecy of Daniel 8, we discover that this was the work of the power symbolized by the little horn. Let us note that in these two passages, the word «sacrifice» does not appear in the original text. We will keep this word for the purpose of this lesson, but we must keep in mind that the «daily» may designate something other than the «daily sacrifice». For example, it could designate the earthly political power transferred, willingly or not, from one empire to another. |
Daniel 8:11 | |
[The little horn] magnified himself even to the Prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away. |

Daniel 8:11,12 | Comments |
[The little horn] magnified himself even to the Prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of the sanctuary was cast down. And a host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground. |
As we have seen in our preceding lessons, this little horn symbolizes the Church of Rome. In a future lesson, we will study in detail how the Church of Rome corresponds with all the characteristics of the little horn. This church, which became a political power in A.D. 538, attacked the daily sacrifice, and took it away. How did that happen? |

He magnified himself even to the Prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of the sanctuary was cast down. And a host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground. |
In 538, the Church of Rome introduced itself as being the official representative of God on earth. In this way, it robbed Jesus, the Prince of the host, of the merit of His daily work of intercession in the heavenly sanctuary. This is how the Church of Rome took away the daily sacrifice, marking the starting point of the 1290 days. |

Revelation 13:5,6 | Comments |
Power was given to him to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God. |
During the following 1260 years (the prophetic «forty and two months»), from 538 to 1798, the Church of Rome, which had now entered the political field, presented itself as God’s representative on earth, mediator between God and men. These claims directly attacked Jesus’ work of intercession in the heavenly sanctuary. |
Revelation 11:2 | |
The holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. |

Matthew 22:21 | Comments |
[Jesus] said to them, «Render therefore to Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.» |
The arrival of the Church of Rome on the political scene in 538 laid the foundation for union between Church and State. And such a union, which still exists today, has always borne very bad fruit, such as intolerance and persecution which marked the 1260-year reign of the Church of Rome. Jesus knew the dangers of uniting Church and State, and this is why He always commanded that they be kept separate. |

Daniel 12:11 | Comments |
From the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that makes desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. | The first reign of the Church of Rome, which lasted 1260 years, came to an end in 1798, exactly as foretold, as we have seen in our preceding lessons. So, to complete the period of 1290 days, we could believe that we only have to add 30 years to 1798, thus leading to 1828. However, if we examine the context of the 1290 days prophecy, we will see that we must not fall into this trap. Let’s study this context more carefully. |

Daniel 12:8,9,11,12 | Comments |
And I heard, but I understood not. Then said I, «O my lord, what shall be the end of these things?» And he said, (...) «From the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that makes desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. Blessed is he that waits, and comes to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days.» |
First, we notice that the 1290 days and the 1335 days were given following a question from Daniel, who did not understand the answer to another question which was asked earlier in the same chapter. What was that first question? |
If I Were Told the Future | Lesson 52
The 1290 Days | ||

Daniel 12:6,7 | Comments |
«How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?» And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was on the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by Him that lives for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and a half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. |
So, that first question was, «How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?» That question is identical to the one Daniel asked later, that is, «What shall be the end of these things?» (Daniel 12:8). |

Daniel 12:6 | Comments |
How long shall it be to the end of these wonders? | In fact, this question follows the great vision of Daniel chapter 11, which we began to study in the lesson «Daniel 11: The Perfect Portrait». In a future lesson, we will see that the second part of the vision of Daniel chapter 11 presents the apostate church’s misdeeds, first during the Middle Ages, and then at the time of the end. Interestingly, the answer to the question «How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?» also presents these two periods during which the Church of Rome reigns. Let’s now study the content of this answer. |

Since the papacy has two distinct reigns, the answer to the question «How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?» indicates that there will be two ends:
|

Daniel 12:11 | Comments |
From the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that makes desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. | The 1290 days, which also answer the question «What shall be the end of these things?», therefore concern the years of the Roman Church’s reign. So, at the interruption of its first reign in 1798, the course of the 1290 days was also interrupted, and will resume only when the Church of Rome comes back in force. Besides, the book of Revelation confirms the importance of this interruption. Let’s look at the following verses. |
If I Were Told the Future | Lesson 52
The 1290 Days | ||
Screen 20 |
Revelation 13:1,3 | Comments |
I saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns. (...) And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed. And all the world wondered after the beast. |
The book of Revelation describes the political power of the Roman Church as a beast rising up out of the sea (we will see why in a future lesson). Then, just like the book of Daniel, Revelation indicates that the beast’s reign will be interrupted: «I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death.» But its «deadly wound» will be healed, and the beast will enter into a second reign, during which it will be admired by the whole world. |

Revelation 17:8 | Comments |
The beast that you saw was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition. And they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. |
A few chapters later, Revelation takes up the symbol of the beast, and indicates once again that:

Daniel 12:11 | Comments |
From the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that makes desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. | Now, here is the crucial question: When must we consider the Church of Rome to have entered into its second reign? To help us answer this question, let’s linger a few moments over the words «the abomination that makes desolate». This expression describes the work of two oppressors of God’s people:
|

The 1290 Days | ||
Screen 23 |
Daniel 9:26,27 | Comments |
The people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. (...) For the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate. |
«The abomination of desolation» first describes the destruction of Jerusalem and its temple by the Roman armies led by general Titus in A.D. 70. |
Matthew 24:15,16 | |
When you therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, whoever reads, let him understand: then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains. |

Daniel 8:12,13 | Comments |
And a host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practiced, and prospered. Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said to that certain saint which spoke, «How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation?» |
But «the abomination of desolation» also has a spiritual application, pointing to the successor of the Roman Empire: the Church of Rome. |
Daniel 11:31 | |
And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that makes desolate. |

Matthew 23:37,38 | Comments |
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets, and stone them which are sent to you, how often would I have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and you would not! Behold, your house is left to you desolate. |
In fact, just as the Roman Empire literally trod under foot Jerusalem, «the holy city», in A.D. 70, the Roman Church has spiritually trod under foot the heavenly holy city, by attacking God and His people, during the 1260 years (42 months) of its first reign. |
Revelation 11:2 | |
The holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. |

Daniel 9:26,27 | Comments |
The people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. (...) For the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate. |
Just as the Roman Empire literally attacked the earthly sanctuary in A.D. 70, the Church of Rome, by its false doctrines and arrogant claims, has spiritually attacked the heavenly sanctuary during the 1260 years of its first reign. |
Daniel 8:11 | |
Yes, he magnified himself even to the Prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of the sanctuary was cast down. |

Revelation 17:1,2,4,5 | Comments |
«Come here; I will show to you the judgment of the great whore that sits on many waters: with whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.» (...) [She had] a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication. And on her forehead was a name written, «Mystery, Babylon the Great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth.» |
But the «abomination» also refers to the second reign of the Church of Rome, symbolized here by a whore called Babylon, «the mother of abominations». This whore, in the last days, makes all the nations drunk with the wine poured from her «golden cup full of abominations». |
If I Were Told the Future | Lesson 52

Revelation 17:2,4 | Comments |
The kings of the earth have committed fornication [with the great whore], and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. (...) [She had] a golden cup in her hand full of abominations. |
So, 30 years after the beginning of the Roman Church’s second reign, adding to the 1260 years of the first reign to complete the 1290 years, we must find an event linked with the «abomination», that is, the alliance between the apostate Church and the nations intoxicated with her wine. |

Daniel 12:11 | Comments |
From the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that makes desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. | In brief, to solve the 1290 days enigma, we need to answer these two questions:
|

The 1290 Days | ||
Screen 30 |
Revelation 13:3 | Comments |
I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed. And all the world wondered after the beast. |
At this point, we offer a word of caution: Please do not conclude too hastily that the Roman Church entered into its second reign in 1929, when it recovered its political power by the Lateran Treaty. Indeed, prophecy seems to attach more importance to the fact that the Roman Church regained its influence on the nations («all the world wondered after the beast»), than to the simple fact that the Church recovered its political power in 1929, without having any real influence over the world at that time. |

John 12:16 | Comments |
These things understood not His disciples at the first. But when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of Him. |
We also offer this second word of caution: Some prophecies can only be fully understood at or near the time of their final fulfillment. It was the case during Jesus’ life here on earth, as these verses clearly show us, and it will also be the case in the last days. So we must proceed with caution, humbly and prayerfully, when trying to understand unfulfilled prophecy. Actual events may be somewhat different from what we expect, but the Holy Spirit will guide us and prepare us for whatever happens. |
John 14:29 | |
[Jesus said,] «And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, you might believe.» |

Daniel 12:4,9,10 | Comments |
But you, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. (...) Go your way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand. But the wise shall understand. |
The Bible is clear: the 1290 days enigma will soon be solved. As the return of Jesus draws near, «knowledge shall be increased», and «the wise shall understand». So let’s persevere in our study, asking the Holy Spirit to enlighten us! |

Our study of the 1290 days now allows us to look into the 1335 days. This prophetic period will be the subject of our next lesson. Meanwhile, we invite you to probe this prophecy for yourself, in a spirit of prayer, so that the Spirit of God may bring you to better understand the meaning of these 1290 and 1335 days. |

Let’s pray together: |
Father, This command was given to Daniel, «But you, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.» (Daniel 12:4). We are now living in this time of the end, and, just as foretold, You reveal more and more clearly the meaning of Your prophetic Word. May Your Spirit continue to make our knowledge increase, so that we may better prepare ourselves for the events preceding the glorious return of Your Son Jesus Christ. In His name we pray. Amen. |
The test of Lesson 52 is waiting for you!
